A great way to make sure you enjoy your holiday season is to
make sure you avoid dental emergencies. A dental emergency during the holidays
can be difficult to get treated and can take a toll on the whole family. Make
sure that you follow these five tips to steer clear of emergency trips to the
dentist’s office this holiday season.
1.It may go
without saying but don’t crack nuts with your teeth.
Although protein found in nuts helps keep muscles and bones
strong, you shouldn’t test the strength of your teeth by cracking nuts with
them. The hard surface of most nutshells can cause serious tooth and gum
damage, and may even crack teeth. Your safest bet? Use a nut cracker, it’s more
fun that way.
Holiday candy platters are often loaded with treats that can
harm your teeth. Sticky substances cling to tooth enamel and encourage tooth
decay, and thick candies like caramel and taffy can even yank out fillings. Eat
these sweets sparingly and along with other foods to help keep the treats from
sticking to your teeth. Remember that the longer the candy is in contact with
your teeth the worse it is. Sticky candy can last a while.
We know you’re excited to rip into that gift, but your teeth
are not the right tools for the task. Gripping a package or stubborn bottle cap
with your teeth can crack them, possibly requiring a root canal or crown. Give
your mouth a great gift – Use scissors or a bottle opener instead.
4.Avoid
chewing on hard candy or ice cubes.
Crunching on ice or hard candy can lead to cracked or
chipped teeth, which are painful and expensive to treat. Ice can cause
discomfort for sensitive teeth, and hard candies promote tooth decay.
The holidays can be stressful, but biting your nails won’t
bring relief. Anxious nibbling is bad for both fingernails and teeth. The habit
is linked to teeth grinding, clenching, jaw problems, facial pain and sensitive
teeth. If you get the urge to chew, distract yourself for a minute or two and
see if the feeling goes away. Try meditation or exercise to help ease the
holiday stress.
Make sure you have a dental emergency plan for the holidays.
Find out if your dentist will closed and have a backup plan for dental
emergencies.

Halloween is here, and so are all
those scary costumes and haunted houses. It
shouldn't be the ghouls and ghosts that
you fear, however, but the candied apples, trick-or-treat sweets and all the
soda that washes them down! Sugary and acidic foods can lead to tooth decay,
and that can put a damper on anyone's festive spirit.
While it would be nice if your neighbors
all gave out fresh fruit or sugar-free candy
(though we're sure the kids disagree!),
high-sugar sweets are still America's favorite
Halloween treat. If possible, try to
limit children's sugar intake. Encourage them to drink
plenty of water while snacking - soda
will only make things worse! And finally, while it's
easy to slip into a "sugar
coma" and just pass out while watching a favorite horror flick,
this is not the time to stray from your
brushing or flossing routine. Let your children know
that if they eat sweets without their
toothbrushes on hand, they should rinse their
mouths out with warm water.
If you think your child may have
developed a cavity (whether the result of Halloween
indulgences or not), please call us.

While bad breath might be a symptom of
some other disorder, it most likely stems from dental decay and periodontitis. It's
more than just socially awkward - it's a serious threat
Patients with bad breath should be
referred for a complete dental evaluation. If gum
disease and/or dental decay is
diagnosed, it can be treated readily. The patient will no
longer have an infection in his or her
mouth, and will no longer have the embarrassment
of bad breath.
There's no need to live with bad breath,
and no reason to neglect your dental health. If
you have questions regarding halitosis, please call our
office

Did you know that what you eat can affect your smile? We all know,
a balanced, nutritious diet is essential to healthy living. We also know that poor
nutrition can lead to all kinds of health issue, but did you know that poor
nutrition can lead to oral health problems such as gum disease and cavities. In
fact, studies show that people who have lost teeth or wear dentures don't eat
as many fruits or vegetables and tend to have less nutritious diets overall.
Most nutrients come into your body in one way. Your mouth! Your
mouth is your body’s initial point of contact with the nutrients you consume.
So naturally, what you put in your mouth impacts not only your general health
but also the health of your teeth and gums. Did you know that certain foods can
put you at risk for cavities and other oral health problems? Below are some
nutrition tips that will help you achieve a healthier smile. Remember: If your
nutrition is poor, the first signs often show up in your oral health.
Eating a balanced diet can make a difference in your oral health.
A balanced diet should include:
Fruits and vegetables. Combined these should be half of what you
eat every day.
Grains. Make sure at least half of the grains you eat are whole
grains, such as oatmeal, whole wheat bread and brown rice.
Dairy. Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy foods.
Lean proteins. Make lean protein choices, such as lean beef,
skinless poultry and fish. Try and vary your protein choices to include eggs,
beans, peas and legumes, too.
Also remember to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary,
acidic drinks.

Dental implants are among the most advanced options for
restoring missing teeth. Dental implants
are metal posts that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your
gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth
(crowns) or a bridge onto them. The results are highly esthetic and comfortable
for patients. In fact, dental implants allow many patients to do away with
dentures or removable partials.
How do Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants are usually made of titanium, which is the
same inert metal that is used for prosthetics in humans. Because implants fuse
to your jawbone, they provide a very stable support for artificial teeth.
Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won't slip or shift in your mouth.
This is an especially important benefit when eating and speaking. This secure
fit helps dentures, bridges, and individual crowns placed over implants, feel
more natural than conventional bridges or dentures. With dental implants
patients can now avoid the discomfort or embarrassing situations caused by poor
fitting dentures.
For most people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply
not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In
addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the
space left by the missing tooth. Unfortunately, many times there are not enough
teeth to support a dental bridge. An advantage of dental implants is that no
adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement
tooth/teeth in place. Dental implants take a one tooth problem and give it a
one tooth solution.
Am I a good candidate for dental Implants?
To receive implants, you need to have healthy gums and
adequate bone to support the implant. You must also commit to keeping these
structures healthy and clean. Meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits
are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.
