DJ Khaled and Dr. Mereos, Miami Beach Dentist on Dental Emergencies

Miami Beach dentist and DJ Khaled

Dental emergencies happen to everyone, accidents happen! Even to our very own DJ Khaled, and knowing what to do when a dental emergency occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

Here are some tips for common dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it in between your cheek and gums, in milk, or use a tooth preservation productthat has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Then, get to your dentist’s office right away.
  • Cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area. Put cold compresses on the face to keep any swelling down.
  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.
  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between the teeth. Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues.
  • For objects stuck in the mouth, try to gently remove with floss but do not try to remove it with sharp or pointed instruments.
When you have a dental emergency, it’s important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.

Here are some simple precautions you can take to avoid accident and injury to the teeth:

  • Wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities.
  • Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth.
  • Use scissors, NEVER your teeth, to cut things.
If you have a dental emergency call our office.

Do Your Gums Bleed? How to Deal with Bleeding Gums and Spot Serious Dental Problems

miami dentistDo your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or floss? There are many reasons your gums could bleed.
In some cases, bleeding gums can be a sign of gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal disease. If your gums bleed easily or bleed when you brush, then make an appointment with our office to evaluate your oral health. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible and preventable.

South Beach Dentist
Some bleeding is normal. For example, if you’ve just started a new flossing routine, your gums may bleed at first as they get used to cleaning between the teeth. This usually goes away on its own in about a week. Some pregnant women develop a condition known as “pregnancy gingivitis,” an inflammation of the gums that can cause swelling and tenderness. Gums also may bleed a little when brushing or flossing regularly. Also, if you take blood thinners, these medications may cause your gums to bleed. Contact your physician if the bleeding does not stop naturally. Your gums could also be bleeding if you brush too hard. Try an extra-soft or soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. This may alleviate the bleeding.
If your gums bleed regularly or enough to worry you, make an appointment with us or your physician. It could be a sign that something else is wrong.
The best medicine is always prevention. Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day and schedule regular dental visits.

Are Your Teeth Sensitive? Miami Beach Dentist Discusses Ways to Eliminate Sensitive Teeth

miami dentist

If a glass of cold water is causing you to jump? Or a sip of hot coffee is a painful experience for you? Maybe brushing or flossing makes you wince occasionally? If you answered yes to any of these, you may suffer from sensitive teeth. What actually causes sensitive teeth? Here are a few possible causes for sensitive teeth:

Tooth decay (cavities)
Fractured teeth
Worn fillings
Gum disease
Worn tooth enamel
Exposed tooth root
Dental Trauma

Your teeth have a layer of enamel that protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin. Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity to certain things.

Did you know that sensitive teeth can be treated? The type of treatment will depend on what is causing your specific sensitivity. Some of these treatments include:

Special desensitizing toothpaste. These special toothpastes usually contain compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve. They may take several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.

Fluoride gel application. This is an in-office procedure that actually strengthens the tooth enamel. The result is reduced the transmission of sensations and less sensitivity.

Dental crown, inlay or bonding. These are dental restorations that correct a flaw or decay. The ultimate result is reduced sensitivity or even no sensitivity at all.

Gum graft. This is a surgical option that replaces gum tissue that has been lost from the root.  This will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.

Root canal. Sometimes when sensitivity is severe and persistent and you have tried other options, a root canal may be the solution.

One of the main keys to reducing tooth sensitivity is having a sound dental health plan. Yes, proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Start by getting a professional cleaning in our office and continue with proper dental care at home.

Make an appointment with our office today if you have sensitive teeth. Many times simple changes as changing your toothbrush or adjusting your hygiene routine are enough to diminish tooth sensitivity. However, it is good to know that there are many options available to reduce sensitive teeth.

Wisdom Teeth- How Wise Do They Make You?

miami beach dentistMiami Beach dentist on wisdom Teeth

They usually appear when you are between 17 and 21. They are actually called ‘third molars’ and they are the last to appear, right at the back of the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth – one in each corner. Historically, these teeth have been called wisdom teeth because they come through at a more mature age.
Wisdom teeth can lead to serious problems if there isn’t enough space for them to erupt or they come through in the wrong position. You should make an appointment to visit our office if you're experiencing severe pain or discomfort from your wisdom teeth. Regular dental checkups are important for us to track the progress and condition of your teeth.
Surprisingly, not everyone develops the third set of molars, but according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, about 90 percent of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. A wisdom tooth may be impacted  because it is turned to the side, tilted or otherwise positioned incorrectly in the jaw. It may also become impacted when there is not enough room in the jaw or the mouth for them to emerge. Every patient is unique, but in general, wisdom teeth should be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as pain, infection, damage to neighboring teeth, gum disease and more. There is no way to prevent an impacted tooth, but careful dental hygiene — brushing, flossing or the use of water-jet devices — can reduce the risk of infection. For some, they experience pain and discomfort when the teeth are emerging. You can sometimes relieve minor irritation by rinsing with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) or by taking over-the-counter painkillers. If the wisdom tooth pain is the result of swelling, applying an ice pack may be able to help. Simply use a commercial ice pack or put some ice is a plastic baggie, wrap it in a towel and apply it to the swollen area. Stay away from foods that are hard or loaded with sugar. Chewing hard foods can make the pain worse while the sugar in sweet foods can get inside your gums and aggravate the wisdom tooth infection.

The definitive way of dealing with wisdom teeth pain is to remove them. It is much better to remove your wisdom teeth as an elective procedure and not as an emergency. I you experience any of these symptoms, visit our office immediately.
