Dental Halloween Guide - A Parent's Guide to A Healthy Halloween

Miami beach dentist

Do you worry about Halloween candy and its effect on your children's teeth? Don't despair — with some precautions you can still let them enjoy this special occasion, and help them maintain a healthy smile! It’s important to know how candy affects your child’s teeth. As we all know, most foods contain sugars or starches that enable bacteria in dental plaque to produce acids. This especially true for candy. This attack by bacterial acid, usually lasts around 20 minutes or more and it can eventually lead to a loss of tooth mineral (the hard part of the tooth) and, eventually to cavities.

The longer the teeth are exposed to the sugars the worse the effect. This is why candy like chocolates, that dissolve quickly, are better than candy that takes long to dissolve. Also avoid sticky candies for that same reason. Another popular option that works well is to have your children select their favorite candy and donate the rest. This way your children can be proactive in the decision process and do some social good as well.

No candy is not the answer. Remember that depriving your child of Halloween treats will only make him or her want them more. Make sure that they practice good oral hygiene by making sure your child brushes and flosses every day, uses fluoride toothpaste and visits the dentist regularly.

Do Your Gums Bleed? How to Deal with Bleeding Gums and Spot Serious Dental Problems

miami dentistDo your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or floss? There are many reasons your gums could bleed.
In some cases, bleeding gums can be a sign of gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal disease. If your gums bleed easily or bleed when you brush, then make an appointment with our office to evaluate your oral health. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible and preventable.

South Beach Dentist
Some bleeding is normal. For example, if you’ve just started a new flossing routine, your gums may bleed at first as they get used to cleaning between the teeth. This usually goes away on its own in about a week. Some pregnant women develop a condition known as “pregnancy gingivitis,” an inflammation of the gums that can cause swelling and tenderness. Gums also may bleed a little when brushing or flossing regularly. Also, if you take blood thinners, these medications may cause your gums to bleed. Contact your physician if the bleeding does not stop naturally. Your gums could also be bleeding if you brush too hard. Try an extra-soft or soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. This may alleviate the bleeding.
If your gums bleed regularly or enough to worry you, make an appointment with us or your physician. It could be a sign that something else is wrong.
The best medicine is always prevention. Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day and schedule regular dental visits.

What is a Mouth Guard? Do I Need One?

miami dentist

If you play sports the answer is YES! Mouth guards are coverings worn over teeth, and often used to protect teeth from injury from teeth grinding and during sports. Mouth guards should be used by anyone -- children and adults -- who play contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. However, even those participating in noncontact sports (for example, gymnastics) and any recreational activity (for example, skateboarding, mountain biking) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a protective mouth guard.

There are three types of mouth guards. The right one depends on what you need it for:

Stock mouth guards - are preformed and come ready to wear. They are relatively inexpensive and can be bought at most sporting good stores. The bad news is that little can be done to adjust their fit, they are often bulky, make breathing and talking difficult, and they provide little protection. We usually do not recommend their use.

Boil and bite mouth guards – These can also can be bought at many sporting goods stores and actually offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. The "boil and bite" mouth guard is made from thermoplastic material. It is placed in hot water to soften, then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using finger and tongue pressure. They offer better protection than the stock kind but are often uncomfortable.

Custom-fitted mouth guards -  These are individually designed and made in our dental office or a professional laboratory based on your dentist's instructions. We first will make an impression of your teeth and a mouth guard is then molded over the model using a special material. Due to the use of the special material and because of the extra time and work involved, this custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the other types. These guards provide the most comfort and protection for your teeth. These is the reason that professional athletes prefer these.

Most mouth guards are designed to cover your upper teeth only, but in some instances (such as if you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw), we will make a mouth guard for the lower teeth as well. A good mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech.

There are other kinds of mouth guards for people that grind their teeth. If you grind your teeth at night, a special mouth guard-type of dental appliance -- called a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint -- may be created to prevent tooth damage.

Who Needs a Bite Plate Mouth Guard?

If you grind your teeth at night, then this is for you. Adults and children who grind their teeth at night should have a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint made to prevent tooth damage.

If you or someone you know needs a good quality custom mouth guard, please call our office. Miami Beach Teeth Whitening

Are Your Teeth Sensitive? Miami Beach Dentist Discusses Ways to Eliminate Sensitive Teeth

miami dentist

If a glass of cold water is causing you to jump? Or a sip of hot coffee is a painful experience for you? Maybe brushing or flossing makes you wince occasionally? If you answered yes to any of these, you may suffer from sensitive teeth. What actually causes sensitive teeth? Here are a few possible causes for sensitive teeth:

Tooth decay (cavities)
Fractured teeth
Worn fillings
Gum disease
Worn tooth enamel
Exposed tooth root
Dental Trauma

Your teeth have a layer of enamel that protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin. Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity to certain things.

Did you know that sensitive teeth can be treated? The type of treatment will depend on what is causing your specific sensitivity. Some of these treatments include:

Special desensitizing toothpaste. These special toothpastes usually contain compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve. They may take several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.

Fluoride gel application. This is an in-office procedure that actually strengthens the tooth enamel. The result is reduced the transmission of sensations and less sensitivity.

Dental crown, inlay or bonding. These are dental restorations that correct a flaw or decay. The ultimate result is reduced sensitivity or even no sensitivity at all.

Gum graft. This is a surgical option that replaces gum tissue that has been lost from the root.  This will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.

Root canal. Sometimes when sensitivity is severe and persistent and you have tried other options, a root canal may be the solution.

One of the main keys to reducing tooth sensitivity is having a sound dental health plan. Yes, proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Start by getting a professional cleaning in our office and continue with proper dental care at home.

Make an appointment with our office today if you have sensitive teeth. Many times simple changes as changing your toothbrush or adjusting your hygiene routine are enough to diminish tooth sensitivity. However, it is good to know that there are many options available to reduce sensitive teeth.

Wisdom Teeth- How Wise Do They Make You?

miami beach dentistMiami Beach dentist on wisdom Teeth

They usually appear when you are between 17 and 21. They are actually called ‘third molars’ and they are the last to appear, right at the back of the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth – one in each corner. Historically, these teeth have been called wisdom teeth because they come through at a more mature age.
Wisdom teeth can lead to serious problems if there isn’t enough space for them to erupt or they come through in the wrong position. You should make an appointment to visit our office if you're experiencing severe pain or discomfort from your wisdom teeth. Regular dental checkups are important for us to track the progress and condition of your teeth.
Surprisingly, not everyone develops the third set of molars, but according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, about 90 percent of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. A wisdom tooth may be impacted  because it is turned to the side, tilted or otherwise positioned incorrectly in the jaw. It may also become impacted when there is not enough room in the jaw or the mouth for them to emerge. Every patient is unique, but in general, wisdom teeth should be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as pain, infection, damage to neighboring teeth, gum disease and more. There is no way to prevent an impacted tooth, but careful dental hygiene — brushing, flossing or the use of water-jet devices — can reduce the risk of infection. For some, they experience pain and discomfort when the teeth are emerging. You can sometimes relieve minor irritation by rinsing with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) or by taking over-the-counter painkillers. If the wisdom tooth pain is the result of swelling, applying an ice pack may be able to help. Simply use a commercial ice pack or put some ice is a plastic baggie, wrap it in a towel and apply it to the swollen area. Stay away from foods that are hard or loaded with sugar. Chewing hard foods can make the pain worse while the sugar in sweet foods can get inside your gums and aggravate the wisdom tooth infection.

The definitive way of dealing with wisdom teeth pain is to remove them. It is much better to remove your wisdom teeth as an elective procedure and not as an emergency. I you experience any of these symptoms, visit our office immediately.

Want to Know One of The Secrets to a Perfect Smile? Ask A Miami Beach Dentist

Dental veneers. Popular among movie stars and other celebrities, veneers let you change the appearance of your teeth as dramatically as you want. Veneers let you brighten your teeth and straighten your smile - you can even change the size and shape of your teeth. The primary benefits of veneers are cosmetic; however, there are several ways that they can boost overall dental health. Dental Veneers can lend some strength to damaged teeth so they are good for teeth that are cracked, chipped, discolored, or misaligned. Veneers can even help fix the gap between teeth.

Veneers can be either composite or porcelain. The veneer is actually a thin piece of porcelain or composite material about the size of a fingernail. Once the custom-made veneer is bonded onto the tooth, it becomes extremely strong. It also blends in with the remaining tooth structure so that it is unnoticeable to the naked-eye. Once in place, it looks, feels, and functions just like a regular tooth.

dental veneers
Veneers are a popular choice for total smile makeovers, letting a dentist change not just the color but also the size, shape, and straightness of your teeth. Veneers are often used for the same reasons as bonding - to lighten stains, close gaps and even alter crooked or malformed teeth. Both can be utilized to change the shape or color of a single tooth or if necessary to revamp the entire smile. Veneers are generally more durable and stain resistant than bonding.
