Want to Know One of The Secrets to a Perfect Smile? Ask A Miami Beach Dentist

Dental veneers. Popular among movie stars and other celebrities, veneers let you change the appearance of your teeth as dramatically as you want. Veneers let you brighten your teeth and straighten your smile - you can even change the size and shape of your teeth. The primary benefits of veneers are cosmetic; however, there are several ways that they can boost overall dental health. Dental Veneers can lend some strength to damaged teeth so they are good for teeth that are cracked, chipped, discolored, or misaligned. Veneers can even help fix the gap between teeth.

Veneers can be either composite or porcelain. The veneer is actually a thin piece of porcelain or composite material about the size of a fingernail. Once the custom-made veneer is bonded onto the tooth, it becomes extremely strong. It also blends in with the remaining tooth structure so that it is unnoticeable to the naked-eye. Once in place, it looks, feels, and functions just like a regular tooth.

Veneers are a popular choice for total smile makeovers, letting a dentist change not just the color but also the size, shape, and straightness of your teeth. Veneers are often used for the same reasons as bonding - to lighten stains, close gaps and even alter crooked or malformed teeth. Both can be utilized to change the shape or color of a single tooth or if necessary to revamp the entire smile. Veneers are generally more durable and stain resistant than bonding.

Summer advice from Miami Beach Dentist, Dr. Mereos, ...Eat Berries for a Healthy Smile

Summer advice from Miami Beach Dentist, Dr. Mereos

Miami dentistMiami Beach is known for hot summers! Many people love summer. I know I do. It is the hottest season and is marked by the longest day of the year, plenty of sunshine, vacation time and fireflies. But did you know that summer is also the time of year to enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables that are in peak season and can actually boost your dental health. According to Miami dentist, Dr. Mereos, summer is the perfect season for eating great food full of vitamins and nutrients that are perfect for promoting dental health. Berries are great….add them to your diet and boost your dental health.
Berries

Berries are small, edible fruits and there are a variety of the foods that are great for your teeth and dental health. Tomatoes, cranberries and grapes all fall into this category and are typically abundant and affordable year round (plus they are all excellent choices for boosting dental health and general well being). However, come summer, individuals have the ability to gorge on fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and reap the nutritional benefits linked with some of summers best fruit.

Strawberries are by far the most popular healthy seasonal berry; the fruit accounted for 55 percent of all berry sales in 2011 and for good reason (http://www.statista.com/statistics/191512/fresh-berry-category-share-in-2011/). Ripe, juicy, red strawberries are the perfect snack food for self proclaimed 'sugar addicts' as the perfect berry will taste better than any candy out there, minus the risks and with vitamins and minerals essential for fueling the human body.

One cup of strawberries is delivers a variety of nutrition including magnesium, folate and potassium. A full cup of the summer food also delivers a bit of calcium and over 100 mg of vitamin C; both nutrients are vital to dental health.

Berries are full of vitamin C. Vitamin C is also essential to dental health, especially in regards to recuperating after oral surgery including tooth extractions, gum grafts and bone grafts. Healthy doses of Vitamin C can speed up the recovery process associated with those dental treatments. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) patients suffering from low levels of Vitamin C will need more time to recover from their oral surgery procedures.

Perhaps you are a blueberry (41 percent of 2011 sales) or raspberry (12 percent of 2011 sales) fan? These tiny little berries are known for packing a huge antioxidant, phytochemicals and flavonoids that can help ward of various cancers. Plus those fruits also deliver some Vitamin C along with the naturally fantastic flavor.

If You Think a Trip to the Dentist Is Stressful, Try a Vacation!

Do you have dental anxiety? You're not alone. Millions of people worldwide find even simple dental exams extremely stressful (if they can fit them into their schedules at all). It may be the push you need to get you into that chair... but not for the reasons you think.

Most spend an average of 31 hours of their break dealing with crowded airports, lost luggage and family arguments. (31 hours!) Then, of course, there are concerns about costs. By the end of the ordeal, many would have gladly taken a quick filling over the hassle of a family trip.

So, the next time you're stressed about a trip to our office, just be thankful you aren't headed for the airport! And you can be sure that we'll take far better care of you than any airline.

How to Get a Great Back to School Smile with Miami Dentist Dr. Mereos

Back to school with a smile. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. That’s why it’s so important to take care of it. Cavities aren’t just for little kids—you can get them at any age. When you consume sugary foods, soda, juice or energy drinks, you put yourself at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Be smart. Always brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and floss once a day.

The bottom line for smiles that are healthy on the inside and out:

  • Always brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes
  • Floss between your teeth daily
  • Avoid sugary and starchy snacks
  • Wear a mouthguard when you’re active
  • Don’t smoke
  • Don’t pierce your lips or any part of your mouth
  • Call our office to schedule a checkup. Regular dental visits will help set you up to be Mouth Healthy for Life.

Miami Beach Dentist - Dr. Mereos- Discusses The possibility of Dental Cavities Being a Thing of the Past?

Everyone gets them at some point in their life, but could dental cavities be a thing of the past? Dental cavities are a global epidemic. The World Health Organization estimates that among industrialized nations, 60 to 90 percent of school children and most adults have cavities. Here in the United States, dental caries, the disease which leads to cavities, is the most common childhood disease, nearly 5 times more common than asthma. Fortunately, the latest dental research shows help may be on the way.

Researchers at The Forsyth Institute have made significant advances in research todevelop a vaccine against cavities. The research team has discovered key molecules that can stimulate a human immune response. What does all this mean? The vaccine may inhibit the enzyme that allows bacteria to accumulate on your teeth, making dental cavities a thing of the past (for the most part, anyway).

Because bacteria have already begun to accumulate on your teeth, chances are the vaccine would have little impact on your oral health. If children are vaccinated around the age of 1, however, it could give them cavity-free futures. At this age their immune systems are strong enough handle the vaccine, yet the probability that bacteria have begun to accumulate is low.

While the vaccine could reduce the number of cavities for future generations, it would not replace proper dental care, such as regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups and cleanings. If you'd like to learn more about proper dental care for you and your family, call our office at (305) 532-9114.

Dental Digital X-rays are Faster, Safer, and More Comfortable

Digital X-rays have revolutionized the dental care appointment. They are faster, safer, and more comfortable than conventional x-ray films. Digital X-rays are some of the most advanced technology available today in dental imaging. Digital X-rays create images of specific teeth or a panoramic  view (images of the entire set of teeth). This new state-of-the-art technology reduces patient exposure to X-rays by up to 90%! Because digital X-rays can be saved and stored in a computer, your dentist can compare images easily to show even the subtlest changes. This will allow you to receive preventive treatment before small problems become bigger.
Digital X-rays can be a time saver. No more waiting around waiting for film to develop. They are quick and comfortable. A small sensor device is placed in your mouth. The device is connected to a computer that instantly creates X-ray images on a monitor. In seconds, you see the same clear X-ray that your dentist sees. The device can be moved and placed in different areas of your mouth to create images of specific teeth. Digital x-rays are a great tool for diagnosis and help make your visit to the dentist faster and more comfortable.
