Make a Different Kind of Resolution This Year - Miami Beach Dentist Tells You How

Did you know that one third of resolutions don’t make it past the end of January, according to the time management firm FranklinCovey. This year we encourage you to make a resolution to achieve the healthiest smile you can, but do it the right way to avoid failing at your resolution. Most resolutions fail because they’re not the right resolutions for you.

Your resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons:

  •          Not personal - It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change.
  •         Not specific - It’s too vague.
  •          No plan - You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution.

Your resolutions should be smart — and SMART. That’s an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. It works for goals and resolutions. Here is how.

Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. “Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely saying ‘I want a nice smile.’ You want to have a specific goal: what is a healthy smile to you? “Cavity free at my next dental visit” — that’s going to be more effective.

Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a more beautiful smile. Then take pictures of your smile over time so you can track your progress how your teeth look. Logging progress into a journal can reinforce the progress, no matter what your resolution may be.

Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals. But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you frustrated, or affect other areas of your life to the point that your resolution takes over your life. So, for example, having a Hollywood perfect smile may be a stretch depending on the current condition of your teeth. Instead focus on smaller steps. Start with being cavity free, then work up to whiter teeth, and eventually to perfect shaped teeth.

Relevant. Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons? “If you do it out of the sense of self-hate or remorse or a strong passion in that moment, it doesn’t usually last long,” said Dr. Michael Bennett, a psychiatrist and co-author of two self-help books. “But if you build up a process where you’re thinking harder about what’s good for you, you’re changing the structure of your life, you’re bringing people into your life who will reinforce that resolution, then I think you have a fighting chance.”

Time-bound. Like “achievable,” the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller intermediate goals set up along the way. “Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress,” Charles Duhigg, author of “The Power of Habit” and a former New York Times writer, said. “If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.”

Make having a healthy smile a habit, a resolution and a goal for this year. The best part is that you do not have to go at it alone. Call our office and we can help you get started on your way to a healthier smile!

Miami Beach Dentist Tackles the Question; Are Dental Implants the Right Option for Me?

Miami Beach dentist on dental Implants.

Implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. If you have lost a tooth, it is likely that one of your options is to replace it with a dental implant. Dental implants are the most natural replacement for a missing tooth.  Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about Dental Implants:

What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium metal replacement for a root of a tooth that is surgically implanted in the jawbone. Though there's some evidence that ancient people may have tried to create dental implants from pieces of shell, nothing beats modern titanium. In the 1960's, it was discovered that bone will grow so close to a titanium implant that bone and implant essentially become one.
As the body heals for approximately two to six months after the surgery, the bone around the implant fuses to the implant through a process called osseointegration. After the healing phase is complete, the implants are used to anchor crowns, bridges, or dentures.

What Is the Dental Implant Process Like?
The process should begin with a thorough evaluation of the patient's medical and dental history, and a full clinical examination of the entire mouth and missing tooth area. The clinical exam should also include specific X-rays. After assessing the patient, a comprehensive treatment plan can be devised. From that point, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia. The length of the healing time is based on the quality and quantity of bone, as well as the type of implant placed. After adequate healing is allowed to occur, the implant can be used to support a crown, bridge, or denture.

How Many Dental Implants Should Be Placed?
This is a question that should be determined during the treatment plan. A good rule-ofthumb is to place one implant for each tooth replaced. Other decisive factors for the number of implants needed for success is the quality and quantity of the patient's bone. Equally as important are the existing anatomy of the bone and the financial resources of the patient. Placing enough implants to restore teeth is vitally important to the long-term success of the restoration. Simply stated, the most costly mistake is to have an implant fail because not enough implants are placed to support the teeth. If the number of implants is limited due to financial constraints of the patient, then the implant treatment should be avoided or the type of restoration must be altered.

Who Should You See about Getting Dental Implants?
When getting dental implants, you should select a dentist or dental team with in-depth knowledge and prior experience with all aspects of the treatment. It is important to know that implant treatment consists of two components: a surgical phase and a restorative phase. Traditionally, a dental surgeon, like an oral surgeon or a periodontist, performs the surgical component. A general dentist, or prosthodontist and laboratory technician performs the restorative component. However, as implant dentistry has become more sophisticated, sometimes a dentist who specializes in restorative dentistry conducts the entire procedure.

Are There Different Types of Dental Implants?
Yes, several types are available. The American Dental Association considers both the endosteal and the subperiosteal implants to be acceptable. An important factor for selection is to determine whether your jawbone can adequately support the implant. Most dental implants placed today are endosteal root form fixtures (similar to a manmade tooth root).

More knowledgeable patients have more input to offer their dentists about their implant treatment and have better chances of a successful treatment outcome.

Dental Holiday Hacks to Maintain Your Smile through the Holidays from a South Beach Dentist

It’s your favorite time of year and you have invested your hard earned money on teeth whitening services, and now you want to keep it—especially through the holiday season. Unfortunately, just because your teeth are whiter this does not mean it will last forever.

You’ll need to stay away from stained foods and drinks to avoid the spotting in your smile.

Some of those staining foods and drinks include:
tea
sauces
sports drinks
wine
berries
soda
candy

While some of y our favorite treats can stain the teeth, this does not mean you have to stop consuming them completely. There are ways to still eat your favorite foods and drinks and still keep your teeth sparkling. Try these dental holiday hacks.

Cut back:
Some of these foods are extremely healthy for your overall health especially blackberries and blueberries because of its antioxidants. You can still eat these treats, but eat them moderately.

Substitute:
If you’re too nervous to consume staining fruits, replace them with other antioxidant sources. Apples, pears, cauliflower, grapefruit, and melons are great replacements to keep up with your antioxidant intake.

Use a straw:
Whether you’re drinking your favorite soda or tea, sip through a straw to avoid staining. It’ll keep the staining away from your front teeth.

Swallow swiftly:
When you drink your favorite beverages, do so quickly and not let the liquid linger in your mouth.

Rinse and brush:

After your meal, rinse your mouth with water right away followed by a thorough brush to clean your teeth from the staining foods.

Miami Beach Dentist, Dr. Mereos, Shares his Holiday Survival Guide for Your Smile

Yes, it got here quicker than you expected it. The holidays are upon us, and 'tis the season for a bit of togetherness (and a lot of indulgence). We don't all celebrate the same holidays or adhere to the same belief systems, but there is one thing that seems to unite us all: comfort food.

It's food, fun, and friends. Cold weather and sweets go hand-in-hand. What's a good snowball fight without a warm cup of cocoa to come home to? Even in warmer climates, it's difficult to dissuade dreams of sugar plums after a good night of classic movies with your family. So, while this "soul food" may be good for your spirits, take a moment to think about what it's doing to your teeth.

How Could Something So Good Be So Bad?

Sweets taste so good, but sugar can wreak havoc on your pearly whites. It's a complicated process, but here's the scoop. Bacteria in your mouth use your sweets as energy, growing and multiplying faster than they would otherwise. Some bond with the sugar to form a sticky glue called plaque. Plaque, in turn, produces acid. The acid dissolves the minerals that make your tooth enamel hard, and the surface becomes porous. The acid causes these tiny holes in the enamel to become bigger until one large hole appears. This is a cavity.

Does This Mean No More?

While ideally we would never expose our teeth to sugar or anything else that promotes tooth
decay, that's just not realistic. All we can do is try to minimize the damage. Don't let your holiday
routine interrupt your dental care regimen. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride
toothpaste (unless you're a young tyke), and floss at least once.

If you decide to indulge in more sweets than usual, it's a good idea to brush more often. If you
don't have your toothbrush on hand, rinse your mouth out with warm water. Certain sugar -free
gums can help as well. Choose those with Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can help prevent
tooth decay. And finally, try to mix up your snacks. If you're eating a sugary treat, try to also eat
a bit of cheese (or a similar protein) as well.

Make it a New year and a New you: New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile!

Every new year we all get a fresh start, an opportunity to make changes in our lives. You may be considering resolving to save more money, get a better job or lose weight. Many people set new goals about having a healthier lifestyle in the new year. Why not make one of your New Year’s resolutions improving your dental health? Below are a few healthy resolutions can keep your teeth healthy for years to come.

Change Your Toothbrush at Least Every Three Months
Even though your brush may look normal, after three months the bristles become weakened and are not effective. It is also a good idea to get a new toothbrush after an illness. And never (yuck) share your toothbrush with anyone.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables
Eating well is important for your dental health. Poor nutrition can affect the entire immune system, increasing susceptibility to many common oral disorders, including gum (periodontal) disease. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts improve your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation, helping to protect your teeth and gums. In addition, crisp fruits and raw vegetables like apples, carrots and celery help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath.

See Your Dentist for Regular Checkups
By seeing your dentist at least twice a year, you can help prevent any dental health problems before they cause discomfort or require more comprehensive or expensive treatment. Regular visits allow your dentist to monitor your oral health and recommend a dental health regimen to address areas of concern.

For this new year, resolve to treat your mouth right: improve your diet, quit smoking and improve your oral hygiene habits – your teeth and your body will thank you for it!

You can make an appointment with our cosmetic dentist by calling our friendly staff at (305) 532-9114 or by visiting www.precioussmiles.com. Please don't hesitate to contact Precious Smiles if you have any questions about cosmetic dentistry.
