Four Dental Health Tips to Help You Maintain a Healthy Holiday Smile from Miami Dentist Dr. Mereos

It is possible to enjoy seasonal sweets and still have a cavity-free smile to flash in festive pictures. These tips will keep your teeth healthy during the holiday season.

Avoid Too Much Candy – Little is better

It's the most wonderful time of year for candy canes, popcorn balls, and cookies -- and this nonstop buffet of sweets can wreak havoc on your teeth. Instead of constantly snacking, try eating a single dessert and brush your teeth after.

Smart Snacking

Make sure you use a nutcracker, not your teeth, to shell nuts. No nutcracker? Choose a different snack. Is it worth it to break a tooth for a nut?

Keep Your Dental Routine

The holidays can upset your schedule, but you should still brush at least two times a day. To keep up good habits on the go, stash a toothbrush and mini tube of toothpaste in your purse or briefcase and make time to "freshen up" after meals. If brushing your teeth isn't an option, chew sugarless gum, which boosts saliva, helps flush out food debris, and more.

Keep Your Dental Appointments

Skipping a dental exam could get you on the naughty list. It is much better to catch problems now and not put them off until the new year.

Miami Dentist Gives You The Steps To A Bright Smile

Miami Dentist -

Getting a healthy bright smile is easier than you think. Follow the steps below for achieving a bright smile.

1. Your dentist will first examine your teeth and gums and discuss the procedure
best suited to your individual needs. Any cavities or gum problems must be
treated before bleaching can begin.

2. The in-office method generally takes one to three hours and results in an
immediate noticeable change.

3. For the at-home method, special molds will be made of your teeth, used to make
custom-fitting flexible trays holding the bleaching gel comfortably in your mouth.
When you get your bleaching trays, you'll receive instructions about wearing
them. These must be carefully followed. Only the materials provided by the
dentist can be safely used.

4. Generally, the only side effect from treatment may be some sensitivity to hot and
cold foods. If this occurs, sensitivity normally disappears within 48 hours.

5. After completing the treatment, your teeth will be checked by your dental provider
to discuss the results.

6. Smile. Your teeth will radiate a bright new look!

Spring Time is Here - Dental Safety Tips from Miami Dentist

Summer is here! Time for fun and sports. The warm weather is arriving, and with it comes an increase in outdoor sports and activities. Being active is a good thing to do for a healthy body – make sure your mouth is ready for the action!

Handling Dental Injuries
Of course, dental emergencies can still happen. Here are some simple tips for you to follow if you are faced with one of the more common dental emergencies. Keep this list and the emergency kit items below in your sports bag!

If a Tooth is Knocked Out:
Immediately call your dentist for an emergency appointment. Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse with water if it is dirty. Do not scrub or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in the socket or in your mouth between the check and gum to keep it moist. Otherwise, put the tooth in a cup of milk and get the dentist immediately. Remember to take the tooth with you!
Broken Tooth:
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Use an ice pack or cold compress to keep any swelling down. Use ibuprofen, not aspirin, for pain. Aspirin is an anti-coagulant, which may cause excessive bleeding in a dental emergency. Immediately go to your dentist.
Broken Jaw:
Apply cold compresses to control swelling. Go to your dentist or a hospital emergency room immediately.
Gums or Tissues are Injured:
Injuries to the inside of the mouth such as tears, puncture wounds or cuts to the cheek, lips or tongue should be cleaned right away with warm water. Go to the emergency room if severe.
Bitten Lip or Tongue:
Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately. Bleeding from a cut tongue can be reduced by pulling the tongue forward and using gauze to place pressure on the wound.
Emergency Dental Kit:
Dentist’s phone numbers (office and an emergency home or cell number), Saline solution,  and a clean handkerchief.

Dental Tips to Maintain a Healthy Smile During the Holidays!

Our practice wants to wish you a Happy Holiday Season and remind you that during this fun and festive time of year, it is easy to get busy and forget about the simple things we do automatically any other time of year.

Make sure that brushing your teeth is not one of these forgotten things.  In fact it is better to brush and floss more often during this time of hearty meals and excessive sweets.  Below are a few dental care tips to help you maintain a healthy smile during the holiday season:

Be mindful of the things you bite on – candy canes and caramel popcorn balls are wonderful treats that we see during the holiday season but can raise havoc on your teeth.  One wrong bite and a tooth can crack, causing you discomfort and pain.  Avoid biting on anything that is hard, no matter how tempting or delicious it may be.

Don’t forget to include your teeth on your gift list – Make sure to change your tooth brush every 3 months.  Why not give your teeth the gift of a new toothbrush during the holidays.  Electric toothbrushes are a great option to help you on your way to a happy smile!
Don't leave home without it. Whenever traveling to a friend's or family member's home for a meal, don't forget to pack a spare toothbrush, toothpaste, and roll of floss. Make sure to pack enough dental supplies should the meal extend into an overnight stay or even longer.
Happy Holidays!

Create An Electric Smile With These Dental Care Pointers

A healthy mouth is an important part of your overall well-being; gums and teeth can indicate disease long before you're aware that anything is wrong. The following article will offer expert advice on keeping your teeth and gums in tip-top shape. Read on for useful information that will keep your smile beautiful.

You should always try to brush your teeth at least two times a day. When you are brushing, make sure that you are taking your time. You want to ensure that you're doing a thorough job each time that you brush. By rushing through the process, your teeth may not be getting as clean as they need to be.
Visit your dentist regularly. A lot of times dentists are able to spot problems before you ever have any type of pain. If they can find the problems before you have pain, they can usually fix them relatively easily. This can save you a lot of money and pain.

If you have anxiety about going to the dentist you are not alone. Many people fear the trip to the dentist, but there really is no reason to be nervous. All of the staff is highly trained and usually do their best to make sure you are comfortable, whether you are in for a simple cleaning or a complicated oral surgery.

When attempting to whiten your teeth, you should try to prevent consuming any food and drinks that could yellow them. These foods can make any teeth whitening efforts to fail. To maintain your great-looking smile, you should make some changes in your lifestyle.

Teeth and gums say a lot about a person's health. Of course you want to have the best looking set of teeth possible but it's important to go beyond that and understand the implications of oral problems and what you can do about them. Keep your smile bright and healthy for a long time to come!

Great Tips for Daily Oral Care

The best way to remove decay-causing plaque (Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums) is by brushing and cleaning between your teeth every day. Brushing removes plaque from the tooth surfaces.

Brush your teeth twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth, allowing you to reach all areas easily. Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, which helps protect your teeth from decay. When choosing any dental product, look for the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, an important symbol of a dental product's safety and effectiveness. Cleaning between the teeth once a day with floss or interdental cleaners removes plaque from between the teeth, areas where the toothbrush can't reach. It is essential in preventing periodontal (gum) disease.

By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile your entire life. Follow these tips to keep your teeth and mouth clean.  Visit www.ADA.org for more health tips.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety: Your New Year's Resolution

Do you ever get nervous just thinking about going to the dentist? You might be worrying unnecessarily. With dentistry's many advances, diagnosis and treatment gets more sophisticated and comfortable all the time.

It's often best to share your anxiety. If you're tense or anxious, tell your dentist and the dental staff. Getting your concerns out in the open will let your dentist adapt the treatment to your needs
Try to choose a time for your dental visit when you're less likely to be rushed or under pressure. For some people, that means a Saturday or an early-morning appointment.

If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring a portable audio player and headset so you can listen to your favorite music. During the dental visit you might try visualizing yourself relaxing on a warm beach.

These positive techniques work wonders for many. Try them on your next dental visit.

Caries (Tooth Decay)

Although tooth decay has declined among young children as a group, it can still be a problem for individual children, and even teens and adults. That’s because plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink foods containing sugars or starches, the bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel. The stickiness of the plaque keeps these acids in contact with your teeth and after many such attacks, the enamel can break down and a cavity forms.

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is a destruction of the tooth enamel. It occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

Preventing Decay:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
  • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.
